Work Commute is more than Annual Leave for most!

November 6, 2012

Did you know that if it takes you longer than 17.5 minutes to get to work (or 30 minutes total per day), than you’re commuting longer than what you get in annual leave per year?!?!? Crazy right? It certainly is, when most of us have to commute for longer than 17.5 minutes on a daily basis to get to and from work.

Here is a breakdown of some common commute times, check out how many work days your work commute equates too over the year, excluding any public holidays or annual leave taken during that time.

Time spent commuting to work may seem frustrating, stressful and now even more evident a waste of your time particularly when there are options for teleworking/working from home.  National Teleworking Week is happening 12 – 14th November, 2012 where businesses are being encouraged to participate to let their employees work from home at least one day during this week.  Not only does this save significant travel times and help staff have a more balanced life, there are notable employer benefits as well.  These include being able to attract staff from other geographical locations, retention of teleworkers, save costs on office space and improved ability to handle natural disasters.  Community benefits are also evident, such as fewer cars on the road and less pollution.

Although the National Teleworking Week is focused on one week, I encourage all employers and employees to discuss how they can continue this arrangement and ensure productivity teleworking from one, two or maybe even the whole week from home.
