February 13, 2010

Our improvements in technology and communication mean more of us have a work mobile phone.

The ability to be contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, does create the potential for major interference into our personal lives.

It is important when issued with a work mobile or as soon as you believe this is negatively impacting on your personal life, it is time to speak with your employer.

Setting Expectations

Work with your Manager to set the reasonable expectation of when you would need to accept a call outside of normal working hours, ensuring that you consider what is required of you to perform your job (including outside of hours).

By setting boundaries allows everyone to be clear on what type of situation would need to arise for you to be contacted after hours.

This supports your ability to separate yourself (and your family) from work, but also to have some reassurance that if a work call is made, that the matter is important/urgent and will require your attention.

It is also important that your colleagues and clients who also have your mobile number are clear on the expectation as agreed with your Manager.

Our time is precious, particularly personal time and by setting and maintaining expectations with your employer this will assist you to minimise the disturbance in your personal time.
