Our Work Life Balance Philosophy

Achieving a balance between work, family and personal responsibilities through a range of flexible work practices and wellbeing initiatives. These initiatives are provided with the expectation that by better balancing work and life commitments, employees are more productive which creates a benefit for both the individual and the Commission.


Our Organisation Benefits

As a result of the initiatives implemented we have seen low absenteeism, improved productivity and ability to meet organisational goals; a high rate of return from parental leave; and an increase in employee satisfaction with work-life balance.


Flexible Working Hours

Employees have the ability to vary their start and finish times in accordance with the Building Commission Agreement 2006.

Job Sharing

Existing employees, including those returning from parental leave or transitioning to retirement, may request that their role be considered for job share.

Work from Home

Employees are provided with the option of working from home or another suitable location on an occasional or regular basis.


Volunteer/Community leave

Commission employees can support not-for-profit organisations through participating in volunteering activities. Volunteering can be arranged by the individual or through a Commission organised event.

Purchasable Annual Leave

Employees can purchase up to an additional four weeks leave per year by reducing their annual salary.

Study leave

Where mandatory classes, including lectures, tutorials and practicals cannot be taken outside the employee’s normal working hours, the employee will be entitled to up to 5 hours paid leave per week (or pro-rata for part time employees) to travel to and attend the classes.

Where an employee is required to attend an examination as part of their course of study, they will be entitled to one day paid leave per examination, up to a maximum of five days per year.

Paid Parental Leave

14 weeks paid maternity leave (which can be taken as 28 weeks half pay) plus unpaid leave to a total period of 52 weeks. 2 weeks paid paternity leave plus unpaid leave to a total period of 52 weeks. 14 weeks paid adoption leave plus unpaid leave to a total period of 52 weeks.


Employee Assistance Program

Employees who require confidential counselling services may be able to utilise the Commissions’ Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Health/Well-being allowances/discounts

A rebate on a 12 month gym membership from a registered gym provider for the current financial period is available to staff.

Each year the Commission provides employees with the opportunity to have a flu-vaccination. Vaccinations are administered at and funded by the Commission. The Commission also offers employees the option of salary packaging and discounts on travel fares.

Work life balance is important to me because it allows me a 'mental health’ day in which to refresh myself each week.

What work life balance practices have you used that are offered by your organisation?

Casual Alternative Work Location, Flex Leave and I am currently doing a Compressed Work Week.

What has been the major benefit to your life due to work life balance practices that you have accessed through your work?

Fits in with my natural work habits. I achieve more in off peak work times.

Personal Benefits

During my day off I can get all household tasks completed in time for my ‘weekend’ to begin. Able to spend more time in leisure pursuits over the weekend.

I am more productive and able to achieve more during off peak work times.

How has your organisation managed to achieve the benefits of work life balance?

Don’t know.

What is unique about the work life balance practices that are offered by your organisation?

None of my friends have the work life initiatives that are offered at the Commission.

Do you feel that work life balance initiatives are available to most staff?

Yes – work life balance is available to all of our team in one way or another, so long as those initiatives do not affect our teams core function – to provide customer service.

Accruing time off in lieu is a good way for me to self manage my time throughout the month and work according to the demands of my job.

I like to enjoy my time outside of work and spend time with friends and family.

What work life balance practices have you used that are offered by your organisation?

Flexible working hours.

What has been the major benefit to your life due to work life balance practices that you have accessed through your work?

My work can be heavier at the beginning of the month, around monthly deadlines. This can lead to me collecting a number of flexi-hours, which I use as a day off later in the month.

Personal Benefits

I sometimes use flexi-time to do errands during an extended lunch time, which I would find difficult to do at other times of the day.

To spend time with my wife who works shifts.

I am able to work longer hours at the beginning of the month during the peak time, therefore ensuring deadlines are met.

How has your organisation managed to achieve the benefits of work life balance?

By enabling deadlines to be met at the beginning of the month, and allowing me to take time off when workloads reduce.

There are a lot of options regarding flexibility, around daily working hours, compressed working week, etc.
